Back to School: Rive Gauche Style
Amory Blaine, F. Scott Fitzgerald's patron saint of back to school style, fashioned this poetic phrase for his beloved Eleanor in the waning days of Summer (in a poem he called "Summer Storm") “The Splattered Blouse of Day.” It's the sort of splendidly sophomoric image that seems so utterly silly as it swills so well in the mouth of the stylish mind, the sort of image, one suspects, Yves Saint Laurent would have adored. It’s the sort of image that makes “back-to-school” shopping feel simple, ageless, and smart — and, dare we say, there’s no smarter purchase than a Saint Laurent blouse — whether you’re taking a class or teaching one.
